CINETECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE 20TH CENTURY FOX CAMERA DEPARTMENT. THE FOX/SIMPLEX CAMERA (1940) $500 No VS.
35mm Short. B&W Safety Print struck from Nitrate in Mint new Condition. 2 rolls, 1,500’ and 900’. Original uncut leaders.
20th Century Fox designed and built their own camera which they used on most of their classic black and white films from the 1930s. When color technology allowed for single negative, the Fox camera became the most used camera in their inventory. For most of their CinemaScope films the Fox/Simplex Camera was used. This film was created to promote the camera before the Academy Awards Technology Committee for an Oscar.
20th Century Fox had to build their own camera since the William Fox family would not sell Mitchells to them due to the way they treated William Fox, their founder. As a result, they had to design and build their own camera. The key was to not violate the Mitchell patents which were the "L" base rackover (that's why the Fox/Simplex camera cradled over to look through) and the intermittent movement. In designing the Fox/Simplex movement they built a "blimp" covering around the movement that pulled the film down in a different manner.
