GOLD DIGGERS OF 1937 (1936) $295
16mm B&W Agfa Gevaert Print in Excellent Condition. No VS.
(a few of these pictures are soft-that is my i-phone)
DIR:  Lloyd Bacon
CAST:  Dick Powell, Joan Blondell, Glenda Farrell, Victor Moore, Lee Dixon,
Jane Wyman (uncredited), Carole Landis, Susan Fleming (Mrs. Harpo Marx)

1937 OSCAR NOMINEEE for Best Dance Direction: Busby Berkeley

When two investors inform an opportunistic dancer that they can't fund an elderly stage producer's production, she suggests they get an insurance policy on the producer's life.

One of Busby Berkeley's magnificent, gorgeous, over-the-top extravaganzas. Including, of course, overhead shots of scantily clad beautiful women tap dancing.

1937 has one of the best storylines: an excellently plotted farce combining gold-diggers, an inept salesman, a hypochondriac theatre impresario, and his corrupt sidekicks.
This fun plot is noted for two things:  1. The extraordinary sexual honesty that persists in spite of the Hays Code.  This is a Depression where a woman must prostitute herself for a meal, never mind a marriage; as Glenda Farrell says, “It is so hard to be good under the capitalistic system”. 2. And the film opens with Powell insisting on the link between financial security and marriage.

Powell is amiable in a silly mustache, sillier name, and a cheerful pessimism. Blondell is bubbly and serious, and lovely as ever. Glenda Farrell convincingly transforms from cynical modern woman, to accomplice of scoundrels, to loving wife.  And Victor Moore is the inimitable, whining, lonely JJ.

A LOVELY WAY TO DIE (1968) $185.00
16mm IB-Tech Letter Boxed print. No VS.
DIR: David Lowell Rich
CAST: Kirk Douglas, Sylvia Koscina, Eli Wallach

A womanizing policeman with a tendency for violent arrests quits the department rather than face an inquiry. He is recruited by a defense lawyer to assist with the murder trial of a beautiful young foreign widow whose rich older husband was killed. The wife and her playboy boyfriend are the defendants and the ex-cop is assigned to check out their alibi, including a dubious witness. There is a larger criminal conspiracy underway, and the relationship of the suspect and her husband, and his murder, get swept up in the cover-up of the real crime.

MURDER ON APPROVAL (aka BARBADOS QUEST) (1955) $125
16mm B&W British Print in Great Condition. No VS
DIR: Bernard Knowles
CAST: Tom Conway, Delphi Lawrence, Brian Worth

British crime Drama. J. D. Everleigh, a wealthy American, purchases a rare stamp in London from Geoffrey Blake, who says he represents stamp agent Robert Coburn. Everleigh begins to suspect the stamp is a counterfeit and hires private-detective Tom Martin to investigate. Martin, assisted by Barney Wilson, a reformed crook, learns that the real stamp is still in the hands of Lady Hawksley but she refuses to show it to him. Martin gets friendly with Lady Hawksley's secretary, Jean Larson, and learns that Blake is a neer-do-well nephew of Lady Hawksley. Murder also rears its ugly head as Martin finds clues that seem to indicate that everybody he encounters is involved in stamp counterfeiting in one way or another.

This thriller is above all enjoyable for its brilliant flowing conversation, vying with Durbridge and the Saint for elegance and smooth wit. It's all about stamps: faking them, stealing them, killing for them, and getting away with them. This should be easy as they’re so tiny, but some will raise all hell for the passion of their ignominy. Campbell Cotts as Robert Coburn steals the show by filling up the screen with his magnificent eloquence (as bombastic as Robert Morley), while Tom Conway is handsome and smoothly smart to constantly get away from all attempts and sabotage on his reluctant investigation. This is a delightful thriller, no matter how little you know about stamps or how little they interest you - just leave the bother to others.
