A CHRISTMAS MEMORY 1966 $120.00
16mm b/w print 2,000’ excellent condition on reel in can
Dir: Frank Perry
Cast: Truman Capote (Narrator), Geraldine Page, Donnie Melvin
As Christmas approaches rural Alabama, a young boy and his best friend, an elderly woman distantly related to him, prepare for the holiday by gathering ingredients for their annual batch of fruitcakes for 'people who've struck our fancy'. On Christmas Eve, they talk with great anticipation of the next day, but underneath is the sad, almost unspoken knowledge that the boy is growing up and his cousin is getting older and more frail.
Originally airing on ABC-Television as three separate 52-minute specials, "A Christmas Memory" remained unedited for this release, but "Miriam" and "Among The Paths To Eden" were each trimmed to approximately 25 minutes for a total theatrical running time of 110 minutes.
"A Christmas Memory" is one of the three stories in this telefilm.
This achingly sweet, tender, and sad story is based on Truman Capote's lonely childhood and his friendship with an elderly female cousin during the Great Depression years of the 1930s.
Geraldine Page turns in a magnificent performance as the old soul who's never been to a movie or eaten a meal in a restaurant. Her whole life is the boy. She is unforgettable in this film.

THE JOKERS (1967) $100
16mm IB-Tech Print in Very Good Physical Condition. Slight VS Smell, slight warp, but projects fine. DIR: Michael Winner (Deathwise, The Big Sleep) CAST: Michael Crawford, Oliver Reed, Harry Andrews Michael Tremayne (Crawford) and David Tremayne (Reed) decide to steal the Crown Jewels from the Tower of London, not for criminal purposes, but to make themselves famous. TRIVIA: While filming a night scene in Piccadilly Circus, Writer and Director Michael Winner set off an unannounced smoke bomb, causing horrendous traffic jams, after which he sped off in a taxi with the film magazine, leaving other members of the crew to be arrested. This incident caused such resentment that for many years afterwards permission to film there was denied. An American Werewolf in London (1981) was the first to be allowed to do so 11 years after this incident. |
THE KEY (1958) Warner $150
16mm B& W Print in Grea Condition. DIR: Carol Reed (39 Steps, Odd Man Out, Our Man In Havana) CAST: William Holden, Sophia Loren, Trevor Howard It's World War II, and successive British tugboat Captains who are sent on dangerous salvage missions pass along a key to a home-port apartment, where a lonely Swiss-Italian young war-widow lives. She is regarded as a 'jinx' to the ill-fated men who have in their turn been given the key to her apartment. This excellent film comes within director Carol Reed's golden period that began with 'Odd Man Out' in 1947 and ended with 'Our Man in Havana' in 1959. Any director, even one in the same class as Reed, requires a good script to interpret and here he has a superlative screenplay by Carl Foreman based upon the novel 'Stella' by Jan de Hartog which deals with the incredible bravery of tug crews whose job it is to rescue damaged ships in a stretch of the Atlantic known as 'U-Boat Alley'. Loren gives a beautifully sympathetic and understated performance, one of her finest actually. Holden never disappoints and Howard whose film career owed a great deal to Reed, picked up a BAFTA. Mention must also be made of Oscar Homolka and Bernard Lee. The editing by Bert Bates is exemplary, especially the suspenseful battle sequences, while Malcolm Arnold's score is powerful without being overpowering. Of the two endings that Reed was obliged to shoot the one here is far less happy but far more dramatic. |

MURDER ON APPROVAL (aka BARBADOS QUEST) (1955) $125
16mm B&W British Print in Great Condition. No VS DIR: Bernard Knowles CAST: Tom Conway, Delphi Lawrence, Brian Worth British crime Drama. J. D. Everleigh, a wealthy American, purchases a rare stamp in London from Geoffrey Blake, who says he represents stamp agent Robert Coburn. Everleigh begins to suspect the stamp is a counterfeit and hires private-detective Tom Martin to investigate. Martin, assisted by Barney Wilson, a reformed crook, learns that the real stamp is still in the hands of Lady Hawksley but she refuses to show it to him. Martin gets friendly with Lady Hawksley's secretary, Jean Larson, and learns that Blake is a neer-do-well nephew of Lady Hawksley. Murder also rears its ugly head as Martin finds clues that seem to indicate that everybody he encounters is involved in stamp counterfeiting in one way or another. This thriller is above all enjoyable for its brilliant flowing conversation, vying with Durbridge and the Saint for elegance and smooth wit. It's all about stamps: faking them, stealing them, killing for them, and getting away with them. This should be easy as they’re so tiny, but some will raise all hell for the passion of their ignominy. Campbell Cotts as Robert Coburn steals the show by filling up the screen with his magnificent eloquence (as bombastic as Robert Morley), while Tom Conway is handsome and smoothly smart to constantly get away from all attempts and sabotage on his reluctant investigation. This is a delightful thriller, no matter how little you know about stamps or how little they interest you - just leave the bother to others. |
