GRUMPIER OLD MEN (1995) $350
35mm LPP Print in Great Condition. Great Color. No VS
DIR: Howard Deutch CAST: Walter Matthau, Jack Lemmon, Ann-Margret, Sophia Loren, Burgess Meredith, Daryl Hannah
Right when John Gustafson and Max Goldman resolve to save their beloved bait shop from turning into an Italian restaurant, the establishment's new female owner catches Max's attention and arouses his libido.
This movie is downright hilarious with tons of great one-liners. Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon (may they both rest in peace) are two of the funniest actors in history. No one else could have played Max & John. Sophia Loren is still one of the most beautiful women in movie history! One of the funniest scenes is when she says "Holy moly" after being kissed by Max. Buy this movie. You will enjoy it, if you have a sense of humor!
Sadly, the film has the distinction of being Burgess Meredith's final film. On the plus side, he really goes out with a bang. His acting and delivery of witty lines is top notch, and the film does a great job of hiding his Alzheimer's. You can really feel the talent in his character.

PUBLIC PIGEON NO. 1 (1957) LIBRARY PRINT $1749
$1749. --- spring forward sale --- now only $1249. 35mm IB Technicolor RKO LIBRARY PRINT in MINT Condition in lab cans. No VS DIR: Norman Z. Mcleod CAST: Red Skelton, Janet Blair, Vivian Blaine Swindlers con a lunchroom clerk into doing them a favor, supposedly on behalf of the FBI. "The Year's No. 1 Laugh Panic!" Print history: This film was found in what used to be an RKO depot in a small warehouse in Los Angeles some years ago, and has properly been stored ever since. Mounted on 1,000’ lab rolls in 9 lab cans, this must have been an answer print, or a reference for color timing. Either way, you don’t see this sort of thing every day. If no takers, this print will most likely go to the Academy as it’s most likely the cleanest source for a transfer. Shipped on cores in original cans. |
SEVEN YEARS IN TIBET (1997) $675
35mm LPP Scope Print in Excellent Condition. Great Color. No VS
DIR: Jean-Jacques Annaud CAST: Brad Pitt, David Thewlis, BD Wong
Heinrich Harrer, an Austrian climber and Nazi supporter, breaks out of a British POW camp in India and treks to the holy city of Lhasa where he's employed as an instructor to the young 14th Dalai Lama and soon becomes his close confidante.
Brad Pitt is an arrogant Nazi who finds himself captured by the British during a failed expedition to the Himalayas and is later stranded in Tibet after escaping from a POW camp. He finds his humanity in the forbidden-to-foreigners city of Lhasa, especially after meeting the 14 year old Dalai Lama. Echoes of LOST HORIZON, THE KIND AND I, LAST EMPEROR and others abound, but the movie is "old Hollywood" in the best sense with magnificent scenery (widescreen advised: the mountains and countryside of Argentina and Canada stand in for Tibet).
The heart of the movie is the relationship between the blond Aryan golden boy and the young "Kundun." The performance by the young Tibetan actor is so charming he nearly steals the film. An engrossing blend of fact and fiction, the picture manages to avoid condescending to the Tibetans and over-reverent preachiness. Wrapped in an excellent production, this epic story provides truly entertaining viewing.

THIS IS ELVIS (1981) $75.00
35mm Eastman Print in Great Physical Condition. Color mostly faded. No VS
DIR: Malcolm Leo, Andrew Solt CAST: David Scott, Paul Boensch III, Johnny Harra
The life and career of Elvis Presley are chronicled in home movies, concert footage, and dramatizations.
Malcolm Leo and Andrew Solt: enough said. These guys do deep research and do everything first class. This may be one of the best documentaries of an entertainer ever put on film. Elvis Presley meant so many different things to so many different people. He effected society, and hair and clothing styles like no one before him. He changed the music world with the power of an atomic bomb. He sold over one billion records and was the first visual founding father of the phenomenon that became rock 'n' roll. His influence will live for decades to come. This is a personal look, as well as a tribute, to the world's most loved entertainer.
Picture Disclaimer: There is some warming in some pictures due to the phasing of back lite bulbs.

THE WORLD’S GREATEST LOVER (1977) $150
35mm Fujicolor Print in Great Condition. Muted Color. No VS
DIR: Gene Wilder CAST: Gene Wilder, Carol Kane, Dom DeLuise
A neurotic baker travels to Hollywood to attend a talent search for an actor to rival the great Valentino. Although not an actor, through blind luck he succeeds... to a certain degree. Set during the Hollywood silent movie days, when Rudolph Valentino was the rage. Wilder plays the lead role, the husband of a Valentino fan, who has to muster up the sexy man in himself in order to save the day.
In the same league as Woody Allen's early slapstick comedies (Sleeper and Play It Again, Sam) and Mel Brooks' oeuvre (Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein). It touches on several themes: romantic problems, the individual versus conformity, and beauty versus mediocrity. The sets are lush, Carol Kane is gorgeous, Wilder gives one of his most heartbreaking performances, and Harry Nilsson devotes his song "Ain't It Kind Of Wonderful" to the soundtrack. Very ambitious, especially considering that Wilder wrote, directed and produced it.

True Story: I came in to work the last day of production. Routine enough, or so it seemed. One of the last scenes to finish production was a bridge explosion which required multiple cameras to photograph it. My responsibility was to roll an eyemo in a crash housing mounted up high on set. The AD called, "Roll camera!" which was my cue to turn on the camera and run away. For some reason, the FX guys blew up the bridge while I was still standing on it and I barely made it to safety. At the end of the day, Allen Daviau presented me with a bottle of champagne.
